» Welcome to RSVzone |
Since their inception the Aprilia RSV 1000 R and RSV 1000 R Factory series have been turning heads on the pavement, and on the track so it just seemed logical to have a place to talk about them when summer days have gone, and the next trackday is still a few days away. Thus, RSVzone was created, and is currently the only site dedicated solely to only the Mille/RSV line. Not only is RSVzone the place to come to talk about bikes, but it also is a strong community of bikers who share interests outside of riding. Whether you're new to riding, or a seasoned racer, there is something for everyone in the Zone. Come on in and scrub the tires.

What the Frak Happened this Weekend? AKA Why is everything wonky on the Zone? |
|

For starters Happy New Year everyone, and welcome back to your 9-5 work grind. For me, today was especially hard not only because San Francisco is swapped with fog and chilly weather, but because of the events of this weekend.
So I'm sitting in Santa Barbara this weekend, celebrating the new year. It's 70F and sunny...basically paradise. I'm about to go get dinner, and hit the town when I get a txt from our server guy (dlloyd).
"The Zones are down" my cell phone says. The bandwidth charts have plummeted, and the power reader went from it's usual 2 amp reading to basically nothing.
Fuck, the server bit it. What could it be...a power supply maybe? I hope so, those are easy to get and cheap, but it could be a mother board...much harder to find, let alone get quickly. That'd be a few hundred for sure.
The Zone's server shares space with a couple other projects of mine, a long with the servers of a couple friends. I knew one of my buddies was moving his sever into his house, and would likely be doing that during the holidays. Maybe he nicked a cable or something on the way out?
It's easy enough to do, since the space is so crowded. He's server was showing down as well, so this seemed like the likely possibility.
So I give him a call, "Hey...random question...were you in the server house tonight?"
He replies, "Yeah how did you know?" I'm pumped, because this means its not the server dying, and probably just a loose wire that finally got banged out of place.
"My alarms show both our servers down, what did you do"
He replies, "I grabbed my server, and I'm driving home....which server of yours is down" I rattle off some specs and model numbers....and there's just silence.
"Uhh...yeah...that's the server I have right here in my car"
Great...he took my server and not his. Fair enough they all look pretty similar, but seriously!??! Fuck. Easy fix though, he's 10 minutes away, and can pop it back in no problem. Total down time an hour, and on Saturday night at 9pm that's not a big deal.
I get a call an hour later. "Dude, my key isn't working on the doors, can you call someone to let us in."
The short version of this part of the story is no I can't. Without telling me, the company that hosts the servers closed its VIP calling number. The regular office is 9am-5pm, so everything goes to voicemail. They have a 24/7 trouble ticket system, so I fill it out and tag it as "Emergency". That was Saturday night, I have yet to receive a call back nearly 36 hours later.
So we try another key that another server guy has...no luck. None of these keys are letting us in (RFID keys). So he drops the server off at a friend's house, and I drive up from Santa Barbara late last night.
Grabbed the server, went to the server house...my ket still works for some reason. And 30 minutes later, the Zones are up again.
Apparently the hard-pull closed the clock to lose it's time, and some other wonkines...but by the time you read this, the site should be functioning normally.
Hopefully this is the last of our outages for the year, but I already had plans to move out of that server house and into a new one (likely to cause some slowiness or TLZ down time).
So that's the crazy story of why the Zone was down for 2 days, and then acting weird. The big take away from this is...IT'S ALL STEVE'S FAULT!
